I call this The Life-Force Space. Often, this is where the largest and most meaningful financial decisions and forces of life happen.

I learned this through time. Folding irregular or structural spending into my layers made my baseline a mirror of worry, not reality. Keeping them separate left me with a clean €880 that actually reflects my recurring life. Everything else lives in The Life-Force Space. Once that boundary is set, the rest sorts itself.

Here are the seven types of spending that naturally live in this space — outside the five layers, but essential to a complete financial life:

1. One-offs

Unexpected, non-repeating expenses like emergency repairs or unplanned medical bills. They arrive without warning, demand attention, then disappear — never to follow the same script twice. In my practice, emergency dental work stayed outside: amortizing it into monthly layers didn’t smooth reality, it smoothed anxiety.

2. Projects

Temporary, goal-bound spending like renovations, certifications, or travel sprints. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end. They draw from surplus, create momentum, then quietly exit — leaving your baseline untouched. My move from Latvia to Georgia was a project: intense, finite, and tracked separately.

3. Fundamental Investments

Capital that reshapes your structure: buying property, a vehicle, or education that shifts earning capacity. These aren’t expenses — they’re infrastructure. The asset itself stays outside; only its recurring costs enter the layers later. When I bought land, it didn’t raise my €880 baseline — it created a parallel track for maintenance and taxes.

4. Gifts

Money that flows outward — family support, birthday gifts, charity. It leaves your account by choice, not requirement. I track support for family as intentional allocation, not as part of my cost of living. It enriches someone else’s baseline, not mine.

5. Speculative Bets

Hope-based allocation without a framework: impulse trades, lottery tickets, meme coins. No structure, no expected return — just possibility. I learned this after a -30% crypto move: without risk management, it’s not deployment, it’s consumption disguised as opportunity.

6. Internal Transfers & Debt Principal

Money moving between accounts or paying down loans. It doesn’t leave your ecosystem — it just changes form. Layers track what exits to sustain life; transfers adjust the balance sheet. In Georgia, deposit interest is taxed automatically; the principal just waits, untouched by the layers.

7. Buffer & Savings Build-Up

Capital parked for future use: emergency funds, pre-expense accumulation. Not spent, not deployed — just waiting. They don’t maintain or change your baseline; they sit in the wings. My high-yield GEL deposits grow quietly outside the system, ready for deployment when alignment appears.

8. The Unscripted

All the other costs driven by life itself: circumstance, fleeting moments, or pure gut feeling. Unlike reactive emergencies, this is the capital of spontaneous creation. It’s the money spent to say “yes” to an unexpected opportunity, a sudden creative urge, or a moment of pure joy. We are creating our lives all the time, and this space holds the resources for that beautiful, continuous improvisation.

The five layers show what it costs to keep your life running as it is. The Life-Force Space tracks what it takes to reshape it, share it, or step into something new.

Keeping them apart doesn’t diminish either — it just gives each its proper rhythm. The layers are your operating costs. The Life-Force Space is where you invest in becoming who you’re meant to be.

The Defect-to-Effect Paradox

Money moves like breath. You cannot inhale without first exhaling. The lungs must empty to make space for air. Holding your breath doesn’t preserve life — it ends it.

I spent years trying to hold on. Keep expenses below income. Stay within sensible limits. It felt safe. It also felt small.

Then I noticed the defect-to-effect paradox in my own life. Spend slightly more than you earn, while staying within what you already have, and something shifts. The gap itself becomes a mechanism. The “defect” produces the effect: a real need to earn. Not imagined. Not forced. Real.

I experienced it myself. My salary began disappearing within days each month. Not on necessities, but on experiences that made life feel larger. At first I panicked. Then I watched. The money kept arriving exactly when it was needed.

Three Lives, One Pattern

A former colleague and her husband began building a house while both worked day jobs. They attended evening choir rehearsals and raised an infant. She set up a small office on the second floor — the first almost-finished room — and started doing paid translation work at night. Side gigs appeared: publications, thesis summaries, books, contracts. What began as extra income earned in a house under construction became an adventure. All their free money went into the house. More kept arriving. They finished in three years.

The paradox: A clear desire to live differently changes the structure of time. Resources appear to fill the gap. Money follows the commitment.

A family friend, still a student, discovered she loved traveling. First for days. Then weeks. A standard nine-to-five became impossible. Instead, well-paid seasonal work appeared. She would earn intensely, then stop completely and travel. Later, remote positions emerged — jobs that didn’t require daily presence. Combined with seasonal income, she traveled extensively. For years.

The paradox: When a standard job becomes impossible, new paths open. Money flows through unexpected channels. Strict requirements do not block income — they redirect it.

Then there’s my own story. I worked a day job. Classic working-class. Fixed salary.

Everything was perfectly planned — I could have budgeted until retirement. Then I met someone. We experienced more together: deeper conversations, greater joy, larger expenses. My salary vanished within days, every single month. But the desire to live fully remained. Web development gigs appeared. We started a family business. At the same time, my workplace introduced a performance bonus system. She is now my wife - Ance.

The paradox: When spending outpaces income, life forces a resolution. New opportunities emerge, often lighter and more natural than the original work. Circumstances adjust to match the new reality.

In all three cases, the extra work was often lighter than the main job. There was spark-joy. Perfect timing — better vacations, meeting the right people at the right moments, favorable weather. It looks like luck. But the pattern held: when the drive to live an atypical life is strong, resources appear. Time reallocates. Capital flows to fill the gap.

I used to think circumstances had to align before I could spend. I was wrong. Spending aligns the circumstances.

The Shrinking Life

The main reason for earning is rarely the money itself. Material goals hide the deeper need: to simply live.

You can experience the world without money. But money changes the scale. Much can be reached simply by paying.

I’ve watched what happens when the internal drive fades. The process runs in reverse. The desire to earn drops and expenses get cut. As spending shrinks, engagement with the world shrinks too. The will to live weakens. Income drops to match the lowered need. Without a demand for life, the supply pulls back.

The world organizes itself around those who choose to live fully. The spending comes first. The earning follows.

But where Growth expands the horizon, Nice-To-Have simply says yes to what life offers along the way.

It is the first layer where spending is never about fixing, maintaining, or expanding. It is about allowing.

Unlike the four layers below it, Nice-To-Have carries no urgency. No consequence for skipping. No hidden cost in postponement. Gadgets still work. The body functions without upgraded gear. The mind refreshes without curated experience. Maintenance alone is not enough. A life requires choice.

The Boundary

Nice-To-Have covers expenses that make life smoother, quieter, or more pleasant — but only after the layers below are settled.

This is not chasing better. It is meeting quality in the flow of daily processes. Web domains. Laundry. Clothes. Clean drinking water. Not optimization. Not upgrade for upgrade’s sake. Just alignment.

Obligations answer to dates. Survival answers to the body. Emotional answers to impulse. Growth answers to readiness. Nice-To-Have answers to permission.

The test is simple: if this disappeared, would anything break, suffer, or stagnate?

If the answer is no — and the only loss is comfort or polish — it belongs here.

Mine: €250/month

This number is not a budget. It is a ceiling. A permission boundary.

Some months: €0. No upgrade felt aligned. No surplus remained after Growth claimed its moment.

Other months: €400. Two new phones. A taxi ride for grocery provisioning. Domains renewed.

The monthly figure is a tracking tool. It keeps the spending visible.

Mobile phones (€20): Two devices, replaced every three years. Amortized to track the real cost. Last replacement happened in Riga. Passed an LMT center. Suddenly I remembered the cycle was up. Walked in. Discount on the shelf. Quick research. Done. No planning. Just readiness meeting the moment.

Transport (€35): Taxi instead of walking with groceries. Weather-dependent. Energy-dependent. A choice.

Clothes, laundry, shoes (€17): Basic rotation. Not fashion. Survival covers €7 for this — enough for function. This layer covers the rest. The Hoka ProFly+ boots I bought three years ago in Gran Canaria are still going. I felt it when I tried them on. Sometimes a €3 jacket from second-hand serves a year. This layer adds nothing systematic. Just room for when something aligns.

Domains (€3): Four names, renewed annually. Web infrastructure. Small cost. Long presence. Digital expression.

Food for Ance (€150): Grocery provisioning as flow, not duty. Sometimes I buy directly. Sometimes I give her money — hidden, or returned as extra change. It is permission to let care take this form.

Hygiene for Ance (€10): Standard personal care products. Not medical. Bought when the moment aligns.

Higher quality food (€10): Occasional upgrades. More diversity. Meeting it along the way.

Clean drinking water (€5): Store-bought instead of well water. Convenience over effort. The well works. This is easier than filtering, in spring time especially.

The Permission Filter

This layer catches what slips through the cracks of the other four. Take the food provisioning for Ance.

If she would punish me for not providing it → Obligations. A requirement with consequence.
If I had to buy specific products just to keep someone fed → Survival. A biological necessity.
In my case, it fits harmoniously into the flow. It is nice to have such expenses in my life. Not obligation. Not survival. Just permission.

The same logic applies to store-bought water. Higher quality food. A new phone. Not chasing better. Just meeting it along the way.

Adjusted Opportunities & The Surplus Rule

Like Growth, this layer benefits from what life brings at the right time. A phone naturally ages out. A taxi becomes the obvious choice on a rainy day. A web domain renewal coincides with surplus. Life adjusts the timing. The difference: Growth expands. Nice-To-Have simply welcomes.

The source of income does not matter. Passive flow, monthly salary, irregular cash — the mechanism stays the same. The sequence does not shift. It works cleanly.

It never competes with the layers below. It activates only after they are covered. Obligations first. Then Survival. Then Emotional. Then Growth.

Only then does Nice-To-Have ask: Do I allow this in — not because I need it, but because I choose it?

If the baseline holds, the expense is valid. No further justification required. Guilt has no place here. Permission was granted before the spending began.

What This Layer Teaches

Wealth is not about having more. It is about choosing deliberately. When every expense below is settled, the question shifts from “Can I afford this?” to “Do I want this in my life?”

The shift from scarcity to selection is the quiet arrival to the sequence that builds toward “The Covered Day”.

The number sits on the page. For most, €880 in passive income looks abstract. Distant. Irrelevant. An impossible mission. That is the surface reading.

The figure is not a verdict. It is a coordinate. It maps where the weight actually sits. It shows the architecture, not the timeline. Starting balance changes nothing about the structure. The sequence holds. The layers wait.

The framework is no longer a tool. It is a lens.

The underlying question shifts. You’re no longer asking what sustains the body or refreshes the mind. You’re asking what changes how you see the world.

Mine: €200/month

On paper, it looks like a fixed monthly allocation, but the reality is far more fluid. Some months, it sits at zero. Other months, it absorbs €1,000 in a single trip. That monthly figure is merely an average — a way to track the annual threshold rather than a rigid budget. The expense doesn’t send an invoice; it simply waits.

In practice, it tends to cluster. A flight to Latvia every few months for work. Hiking trails that suddenly demand specific gear. A quiet café seat reserved for deep reading rather than networking. The spending isn’t daily. It claims the surplus, then disappears for weeks.

The Irregularity Trade-off

This irregularity fundamentally changes how the money moves.

The advantage is immediate: the pressure vanishes. Spending becomes intentional rather than automatic, and there’s no guilt in waiting for the right moment. Timing replaces consistency, and the calendar finally stops dictating your budget.

But the drawback operates in silence. Postponement feels risk-free because it compounds without warning. A year of skipped Growth doesn’t show up as a broken pipe or an empty fridge. It shows up as an unchanged perspective — the same routes, the same problems, the same ceiling.

Each higher layer demands less frequent action but requires more deliberate attention when the moment finally arrives. Growth can wait. Nice-To-Have can wait even longer.

The Surplus Mechanism

When passive income reliably covers Obligations and Survival, the floor holds steady. The Emotional layer absorbs the first fluctuations, leaving the rest to breathe.

Growth waits for what remains. It never competes with the baseline; it only claims the overflow.

This approach proves that personal expansion doesn’t require a monthly invoice. It only requires the right conditions and the willingness to step into them when they appear.

The cost of ignoring it is never immediate. It’s measured in years, in the quiet realization that your days are perfectly maintained — but never stretching.

And yet. Skip it long enough, and something in your day quietly stops working.

This is the paradox of the third layer. It’s not obligatory in the way Survival is, but it’s not optional in the way Nice-To-Have is. It’s harder to restrict than Growth, less rigid than Survival. It sits in between—and moves on its own schedule.

The Quiet Requirements

These are the expenses that keep your mind from slowly deteriorating. They spark the day back to life. Moments. Social contact. Movement. Fresh air. Specific tastes. Specific conditions. The particular atmosphere under which life feels inhabited rather than merely endured.

This layer also covers what cannot be solved any other way — psychological needs, accumulated tension, the exhaustion that rest alone does not fix. Ignore it long enough and life doesn’t collapse. It just quietly gets worse.

Practically speaking: after two weeks at home in remote work mode, I need a city, traffic, or a trail — something that isn’t the four walls of my workspace. My neighbor has no such need. He stays within the same territory for months — neighbors gather, food and drinks appear on the table, conversation runs late. There’s an emotional richness in the air, as it often happens for him.

For some, this layer lives in financed comforts — a premium vacuum cleaner, the latest robot mop, a high-fidelity home studio setup. Paid off over years, yet the mind stays calm. The trade-off is accepted.

For me, in my twenties, Emotional costs were emotional eating — mainly sweets and “forbidden fruits”: Cornflakes (Kellogg’s, finally!), expensive chocolate, and fantastic-looking cookies. Basically everything that had been denied in my family.

Mine: €150/month

The Extended Baseline

Obligations keep the infrastructure running. Survival keeps the body functional. Emotional keeps the mind intact. Together, they form the extended baseline — the number below which life, in any meaningful sense, cannot continue.

Emotional expenses are personal by necessity

Obligations and Survival don’t move. Emotional expenses do — but within a known range, and on an unpredictable schedule. Some months it stays quiet. Other months it absorbs the surplus. It doesn’t repeat without asking permission. It answers to mood, season, and accumulated pressure.

Next: Growth — the fourth layer, where spending expands rather than maintains, urgency fades, and skipping it for a year carries a cost that shows up only much later.

This layer almost never gets tracked separately — it disappears inside a single "living expenses" line alongside Netflix, restaurant meals, and impulse buys.

Separating Survival is one of the most clarifying things you can do with a budget — not just for passive income, but on a salary too. Once you know the real number, everything above it becomes a choice, not a necessity.

What Survival Actually Contains

Survival covers what the body needs to remain operational: food, warmth, hygiene, water, shelter-related costs. Not the upgrade version. Not the comfortable version. The functional version only.

One question decides every expense here: does the body still function without it? If no — it belongs here. If Survival already covers that function, and this is simply a more comfortable version — it belongs in a higher layer (Emotional, Growth, Nice-To-Have).

Mine: €200 per month

Every line functional. None of it comfortable by design.

Firewood and propane because heating is not optional in winter. Clothing at €7/month is amortized — basic pieces, replaced only when worn out. Transport is for grocery runs, nothing else.

The Number Is Personal

€200 is not a universal truth. It is a specific result of specific choices — one meal a day, basic products, no convenience spending. The number changes mainly with location, body, age, weather, and habit.

Shelter alone shows how wide the range can be:

• Living with parents — shelter cost is zero.

• Renting in central Riga while working remotely — paying a premium for an address the body does not need.

• Keeping a large apartment late in life with empty rooms and no gatherings — square meters that habit maintains, not function.

Same layer, completely different numbers.

What doesn’t change is the principle: Survival is the layer where honest choices live. Not aspirational ones, not social ones. The ones that answer only to the body.

Most budgets never make this separation, so the result is:

• Food and dining out share one line

• Groceries and snacks are indistinguishable

• Convenience and necessity look identical

• Comfort and survival are priced the same

The result is a single number that feels hard-coded — but look closer: half of it is habit, comfort, and assumption, quietly inflated. Splitting them reveals what is genuinely required. And that number is almost always smaller than expected.

The Second Threshold — Two Layers, One Baseline

Obligations: €80/month in my case — the cost of staying connected and operational.

Survival: €200/month in my case — the cost of keeping the body functional.

Combined: €280/month in my case. This is the absolute floor — the number below which life on Earth cannot physically continue.

What remains above — Emotional, Growth, Nice-To-Have — carries a different quality. Those layers can flex — they respond to mood, season, circumstance, flow. These two do not move. Obligations even less.

That is why the floor matters more than anything built above it.

In the expense layer framework, Obligations are that foundation. Without them covered, nothing above can stand. Survival becomes fragile. Emotional spending becomes guilt. Growth becomes complicated. But when Obligations are secured — quietly, automatically, every month — the ground becomes solid. The rest of life can be built on top of it.

This is why I call them sacred.

What Obligations Actually are

Obligations are the costs that keep life functional and connected — the ones with no negotiation, no delay, no “maybe this month I’ll skip it.” Bills. Taxes. Services. Communication.

They also include costs required to earn anything at all. If work is remote, internet is an Obligation. A VPN that enables access to work tools is not a Nice-To-Have — it is infrastructure.

The test is simple: if this expense disappeared, would the operational foundation of life break? If yes — it belongs here.

Not comfort. Not preference. The minimum operational cost of being present, functional, and reachable.

Mine: €80 per Month

Two countries. Two banking systems. Two SIM cards. Life between Latvia and Georgia has a baseline cost. It is non-negotiable. It sits in Obligations.

The boundary rule: would the operational foundation break without it? If the answer is “no, just inconvenient” — it belongs in a higher layer.

Why Sacred

Obligations carry a quality the other layers don’t: they repeat without asking permission. Same date, same amount, regardless of mood or month.

This repetition is not a burden — it is a ritual. The rhythm of continuity that keeps the structure intact. And there is a deeper reason they are sacred: they are the first threshold.

When passive income covers Obligations fully and automatically, something fundamental changes. The lowest layer of financial pressure quietly disappears. You stop thinking about whether the infrastructure will survive this month — because the answer is already settled before the month begins.

That is freedom in its most basic form. Not luxury. Just a floor that holds.

The First Target

€80. That is my target for this layer — not earned from a salary, not invoiced to a client, not dependent on showing up anywhere. Covered by income already in motion, while you are not working: deposits, dividends, returns already in place.

When passive income reaches €80 per month, Obligations are permanently off the table. The foundation holds on its own. Everything above — Survival, Emotional, Growth, Nice-To-Have — becomes the next thing to aim for.

But none of it is stable until this layer is settled first.

Spending is not only outflow — it is creation. Each expense fulfills a will, a wish, a choice. It builds the structure of life, sets the rhythm of days, and drives existence forward.

My Model of Layers

It took time, patience, and re‑structuring of existing concepts to uncover something that connects money schemes with lived reality.

The result is a framework where expenses are organized in layers — each one a threshold, each one a way of living:

1. Obligations — the foundation: bills, taxes, services, communication. What keeps life functional and connected.

2. Survival — the essentials: food, heat, hygiene, shelter. What sustains the body and the day.

3. Emotional — the pulse: moments, social contact, movement, air. What refreshes the mind.

4. Growth — the stretch: learning, travel, practice, experience. What expands the horizon.

5. Nice-To-Have — the comfort: upgrades, extras, refinement. What makes life smoother, not necessary, but felt.

Lifting Life by Reaching Thresholds

Each layer carries its own threshold, which serves as a target for a particular stage of life. When passive income covers one layer, the weight on that part of life quietly lifts.

Know the Spending Number

Wealth is not the requirement. The requirement is knowing the number — and building toward it.

So Why to Spend?

What is spent, matters more than what is earned. Expenses are the architecture towards the one specific feeling: “The Covered Day“. Income only matters once it has something solid to rest upon — and that is what matters to me.
